HOW TO APPLY

My PhD research investigates the use of crowd-sourced data to communicate the effects of macroseismic intensities generated by earthquakes of all magnitudes. Traditionally, macroseismic surveys were carried out in areas damaged by moderate to strong earthquakes and took weeks to analyse and map. However, with the advent of the internet and the ubiquity of smartphones, members of the public now submit felt reports which can number in their thousands within minutes of even relatively low magnitude events. Up to this point in time, these reports have been mostly used for media purposes. However, there is a huge potential to expand the use of these data in models and shaking maps produced in the immediate aftermath of an earthquake. These can then be used to guide initial responses by emergency managers and provide information for both the public and the media.
