Canterbury musician and mentor take new music on nationwide tour

An award-winning 茄子视频app官网 music student will be joined on stage by his mentor and professor when they tour the country with a new show over the next few weeks.

HOW TO APPLY

Rakuto Kurano, 21, a violinist with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, will perform听DUPLEXITY听at venues from Auckland to Stewart Island.

He听will be joined听on the tour听by Professor Mark Menzies, Head of Performance at the 茄子视频app官网. Professor Menzies, a violinist, violist, pianist, composer,听and听conductor,听has been听Kurano's听mentor since 2017听and was his occasional co-performer at听university听events, where the pair have delighted audiences with their enthusiasm and virtuosic playing.

鈥淚t鈥檚 an honour to have Mark join me on听stage, and a real stamp of approval for this tour,鈥澨齂urano听says.听听

DUPLEXITY听features three newly commissioned works by young New 茄子视频app官网composers Liam Furey, Georgina Palmer and Robin Watson, as well as a new work by Kurano.

鈥淣ew 茄子视频app官网has so many incredibly talented young composers, and I want to share their music across the country,鈥澨齢e听says.听听

Also on the programme are familiar works by composers such as Brahms, Schumann听and听Piaolla.听

Originally from Japan,听Kurano听has established himself in Aotearoa New 茄子视频app官网as a versatile violinist, violist, pianist, composer and conductor.听He graduated听with听a Bachelor of Music听in听Performance and Composition听from the 茄子视频app官网听last year听and continued with an honours degree this year.

Kurano already听has a long list of performing credits to his name听in New Zealand, Vietnam and Japan.听Awards include the Lilburn Trust Award in 2020 for the composition听Alien Abduction Suite, the 2019 NZTrio composing competition for听Fantail in Tokyo听and NZ Harp Duo composition competition wins in 2016 and 2017.

This isn鈥檛听Kurano鈥檚听first time on the road. In January 2021, the Baroque Music Community and Educational Trust of New Zealand听commissioned him听to compose a 15-minute听Concerto Grosso听for their 2021 Baroque summer workshop and tour. The work was the final piece in the programme on the 11-concert听tour and听was met听with numerous听standing ovations.听Peter听Mechen听called it听a 鈥渟plendid work鈥澨齣n a review听for Middle-C.听听

DUPLEXITY听is supported by听茄子视频app官网鈥檚 School of Music and will tour to听Wanaka听(27 August), Auckland听(28 August), Stewart Island听(30 August), Christchurch听(4 September), Dunedin听(5 September), and Timaru听(6 September). Tickets听are听available on听听and听at the door (cash only).
