New mentors to boost M膩ori aspirations in UC research

09 June 2021

Research that benefits M膩ori helps all New Zealanders, say two Senior Kai膩rahi M膩ori Research Advisors newly appointed at the 茄子视频app官网 (UC).

HOW TO APPLY

Senior Kai膩rahi M膩ori Research Advisors Sarah Wiki-Bennett and Tipene Merritt started their roles in the Research and Innovation Office at UC in April.

Sarah Wiki-Bennett (Te Aup艒uri) and Tipene Merritt (Ng膩ti Kauwhata, Ng膩puhi and Rangit膩ne) started their roles in the Research and Innovation Office at UC in April.

Their goal as Kai膩rahi (guides or mentors) is to boost m膩tauranga M膩ori (M膩ori knowledge) capability across the university by supporting researchers across colleges and working in partnership with UC鈥檚 Ng膩i Tahu Research Centre.

As members of the Research and Innovation team, both Kai膩rahi are passionate about ensuring M膩ori academics also receive their support.

Sarah, who was previously Manager for Governance Services at Te R奴nunga o Ng膩i Tahu and a former principal at Kirwee Model School, says their focus will be on liaising between mana whenua and UC researchers to support r奴nanga aspirations and m膩tauranga M膩ori opportunities. Her strong relationships and contacts across the takiw膩 (region) will help achieve this goal, she says.

鈥淲e feel fortunate local mana whenua Ng膩i T奴膩huriri has such a strong relationship with the University.听 Our roles will come down to developing internal and external relationships for M膩ori and with M膩ori.

鈥淭his is a massive opportunity for both of us and there are some really unique opportunities for strong partnerships between mana whenua and iwi organisations with the University.鈥

鈥淥ur first priority is getting good outcomes for M膩ori, and that鈥檚 what drives us. What鈥檚 good for M膩ori is good for New Zealand.鈥

Tipene, who was formerly a M膩ori Advisor (Research) at Victoria University of Wellington - Te Herenga Waka, says he is keen to tap into non-traditional funding resources for research, such as the Ministry for the Environment and the Ministry for Primary Industries.

鈥淚鈥檝e been working in the research management industry for about 11 years here and in Australia and I have a good understanding of government research funding systems, particularly through a M膩ori lens鈥.

鈥淩esearchers are going to be more successful as funding recipients if they align with the Government鈥檚 Vision M膩tauranga policy .鈥

Tipene has a Bachelor and Master of Laws from the University of Waikato, and is currently working on a PhD through Victoria University of Wellington that鈥檚 focused on improving m膩tauranga M膩ori outcomes.

He says UC has been very welcoming so far and he and Sarah are keen to run workshops for staff to help them improve their cultural confidence and competence.

Sarah, who has a Bachelor of Education and Master of Educational Leadership, says it鈥檚 hugely important that Research and Innovation has two new Kai膩rahi. 鈥淚t shows the University has acknowledged there is a real need in this space. I think our roles will grow as people get to know us and what we鈥檙e trying to achieve鈥.

鈥淪taff have been saying to me, 鈥業鈥檓 so excited that you鈥檙e here and I鈥檝e got so much work for you鈥.

Definitely there鈥檚 a real desire to have our expertise, and to learn more and challenge themselves and the thinking that鈥檚 gone before them.鈥

鈥淭hey want to know how to put a framework around achieving really good outcomes for M膩ori. They recognise there鈥檚 a gap and they want that gap filled.鈥

The pair have been introducing themselves to staff across various colleges in the University and are keen to hear from researchers at an early stage of their work.

鈥淲e鈥檇 like to get a heads up before people reach the proposal stage so we can help with co-design of the research proposal. The sooner we鈥檙e able to run our eyes over things, the better,鈥 Sarah says.

UC Tumu Tuarua Rangahau | Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, Ian Wright, says Sarah and Tipene have an impressive range of skills and experience to contribute to the University and it鈥檚 exciting to have them as part of the team.

鈥淲ith their help we鈥檒l continue to embed M膩ori aspirations into our institutional research psyche so it鈥檚 part of the process of developing proposals and ideas.

鈥淭he combination of Tipene and Sarah鈥檚 expertise, strong networks across the New 茄子视频app官网research sector, and their determination to promote Te Ao M膩ori research projects, will make them a huge asset to UC. This is truly the first time that UC has had this level of enabling capability.鈥
