17 August 2021

The Ng膩i Tahu Research Centre has appointed its first Professor, Dr Shaun Ogilvie, Te Arawa (Ng膩ti Whakahemo), Ng膩ti Awa (Ng膩ti P奴keko) and P膩keh膩, as Professor of Ecology and the Environment, a co-appointment with the College of Science, at the 茄子视频app官网.

HOW TO APPLY

The Ng膩i Tahu Research Centre has appointed its first Professor, Dr Shaun Ogilvie, a co-appointment with the School of Biological Sciences, at the 茄子视频app官网.

鈥淧rofessor Ogilvie has a solid academic background and a well-established publication record. He understands m膩tauranga M膩ori and where the needs of the M膩ori community can be met through the sciences and research,鈥澨齭ays the Director of the听Ng膩i Tahu Research Centre听and 弄poko of Ng膩i T奴膩huriri,听Associate Professor Te Maire Tau.

鈥淥ur students and iwi need scientists who understand what mahinga kai means and that the knowledge we have built up throughout our generations is equally understood and scrutinised within the sciences. We need to keep building new knowledge and ways of engaging with the natural world for the benefit of Ng膩i Tahu and the South Island.

鈥淪haun has spent considerable time with my father and elders within the tribe as well as the wider community of iwi leaders such as Sir Mason Durie and Dr Rose Pere. It鈥檚 a good appointment and we look forward to producing more M膩ori students within the sciences.鈥

This is a joint appointment between the Ng膩i Tahu Research Centre and the School of Biological Sciences in the College of Science.

鈥淲e look forward to Professor Ogilvie making a significant contribution to research and capacity building in m膩tauranga M膩ori at the 茄子视频app官网, the College of Science and the School of Biological Sciences,鈥 says the Head of the听School of Biological Sciences,Professor Matthew Turnbull.

Professor Ogilvie graduated with a PhD in Ecology from the 茄子视频app官网 in 2000, and since then has held numerous academic and research roles. He is the Director of Eco Research Associates Ltd, an environmental research company, and sits on numerous committees and boards. Professor Ogilvie featured in a recent book profiling 24 M膩ori academics,听Ng膩 Kete M膩tauranga. The 茄子视频app官网鈥檚 Head of Aotahi School of M膩ori and Indigenous Studies,听Sacha McMeeking听(Ng膩i Tahu)听also featured in the book.

Professor Ogilvie听鈥撎formerly an Adjunct Associate Professor of the University听鈥撎齢as recently been appointed as the Kaihaut奴 Ng膩tahi | Co-Director M膩ori of the听, a role he will bring to the 茄子视频app官网.

The appointment of Professor Ogilvie is part of a commitment to grow and attract senior M膩ori academics to the 茄子视频app官网, which Ng膩i T奴膩huriri have supported through the Ng膩i Tahu Research Centre.听In 2019, Ng膩i T奴膩huriri and the 茄子视频app官网 reconfirmed their Treaty relationship听originally signed off by the previous 弄poko, H.R. Tau, in 2001.

弄poko听Associate Professor Tau听says this, the first of five professorial positions, is a commitment towards what a Treaty relationship is meant to be.

鈥淭he purpose of a university is to produce new knowledge through research and to then ensure that knowledge is distributed to students and eventually the community to engage with and to hopefully implement. Ng膩i Tahu are of the view that research should be focused on the environmental and health sciences, institutional economics, law and history,鈥澨鼳ssociate Professor Tau says.

鈥淓quity within the University is quite simple. Knowledge needs to be seen as a capital asset to which our people have equal access and academic leadership provides a route for our students to gain access to new knowledge and to contribute to new knowledge鈥.
