The Prime Minister Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern has presented Ng膩 Karahipi Uru R膩kau (Te Uru R膩kau Forestry Scholarships) to eight outstanding new students at a special forestry scholarship awards ceremony at the 茄子视频app官网 | Te Whare W膩nanga o Waitaha (UC).

鈥淒eveloping skills, capability and leadership for New Zealand鈥檚 forestry sector is a priority for the Government and Te Uru R膩kau (Forestry New Zealand). These scholarships are the first step towards an exciting and rewarding career in forestry for eight exceptional individuals who will in turn strengthen the future labour pool in this vital industry,鈥 says Ms Ardern.

Te Uru R膩kau developed the scholarships to encourage young and talented individuals into Aotearoa New Zealand鈥檚 growing forestry industry. The scholarships are available to M膩ori and/or female students enrolling in the 茄子视频app官网鈥檚 Bachelor of Forestry Science or Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Forest Engineering.

鈥淲e鈥檙e delighted to see the Government supporting professional forestry education, and we are very pleased to welcome greater numbers of M膩ori and women students at the 茄子视频app官网 and ultimately joining the forestry sector through these scholarships,鈥 says UC Vice-Chancellor | Tumu Whakarae Professor Cheryl de la Rey.

The 2019 recipients are: Robyn Patient from Waikuku Beach; Jessica Stock from Tasman; Cole Grace from Gisborne; George Fanning-Ihaka from Dargaville; Nicholas Melvin from Winton, Thomas Brown from Matamata; Max Gomez from Dunedin and Hannah Humphreys from Wanaka.

Forestry Minister Shane Jones describes it as an exciting time in the forestry sector. 鈥淎s technology and science change the way we do things, we need people who can work with robotics, help develop new forestry products and processes, and take them to the market. Our scholarship recipients add to the pool of talent that can accomplish this,鈥 he says.

New scholar sees greener future

Forestry student and scholarship recipient Robyn Patient (Te Arawa and Ng膩i Te Rangi), who attended Kaiapoi High School, was thrilled to be one of the first UC students to receive the Te Uru R膩kau Forestry scholarship.

鈥淚 was so excited. It was something I absolutely wanted to do and getting the support from MPI [Ministry for Primary Industries] and the 茄子视频app官网 was so relieving. My family and extended wh膩nau were really excited. We told all of my marae and family up in Tauranga and Rotorua and they were so stoked.鈥

It was a visit to UC that opened her eyes to the possibilities of a career in forestry.

鈥淚 actually did not know about Forestry [as a discipline] until I attended UC Open Day. I knew I loved Biology, I loved English, and I鈥檓 a good writer. I heard about the scholarship and what they do in Forestry from the lecture presentation at Open Day, and I knew it was something I was really going to enjoy,鈥 she says.

鈥淓ven in my first three weeks here, I know it鈥檚 something I want to continue doing. I made the right choice.鈥

There鈥檚 lots of different career avenues in forestry science and engineering, Robyn says.

鈥淚鈥檓 leaning towards biological research or commercial. I didn鈥檛 realise I鈥檇 enjoy the commercial aspects so much. It鈥檚 something new I learnt about myself in my first few weeks at UC.鈥
