In Cambridge鈥檚 Newton Room,听Te听Whare W膩nanga o听Waitaha听|听University of听Canterbury (UC)听Vice-Chancellor Professor Cheryl de la Rey,听spoke about听the need, in听a听world of increasing complexity,听for听multiple knowledge perspectives,听including M膩ori and Pacific knowledge and partnership.听
Her speech also touched on听UC鈥檚 150 years听as听an educational institute that听admitted women听as students听from the听start, and听the听University鈥檚听ongoing听commitment to accessibility and equity.听听
鈥淭he tertiary sector worldwide is facing many challenges, ranging from AI-learning to climate change, but听I believe our future听is bright. Universities are powerhouses of the knowledge,听ideas,听and solutions that our world needs right now to achieve greater equity and sustainability,鈥 she said.听
In attendance with听Cambridge鈥檚听Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Prentice,听senior听academics听and dignitaries, was听Cambridge听geophysicist听Professor Mary Fowler, great-granddaughter of听illustrious听UC alumnus, Ernest, Lord Rutherford.鈥

The Cambridge visit followed a听special听event for听UC alumni living in London in celebration of UC鈥檚 150th听anniversary, with guest听speakers including New Zealand听High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Phil Goff.听Vice-Chancellor Professor De la Rey听also gave a speech with听Chancellor Adams听and听Po听Whakarae听Professor听Te Maire听Tau听also听meeting with听the听UC graduates in the UK.听
While in London, the听Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor听also visited听the Scott Polar Research Institute, connecting with UC research collaborations.
