European and EU Studies study options

European and European Union Studies is multi-disciplinary. It comprises Politics, Geography, Culture, History, Language, Economics, and Law. HOW TO APPLY

With 27 member states and 500 million people, the European Union (EU) is Aotearoa New Zealand鈥檚 most significant bilateral partner after Australia and China and is one of the world鈥檚 leading political and trading blocs. Europe provides an important reference point to Aotearoa and the global community in cultural, linguistic, and political aspects.

Three core courses of our programme are Jean Monnet courses taught by Jean Monnet Chairs (Dr Milenko Petrovic and Professor Martin Holland):

EURA101 鈥淕lobal Europe鈥 is a Jean Monnet Module.

The Jean Monnet Title is a highly competitive and prestigious title awarded by the EU by a global panel of leading scholars in EU studies to a selected few in recognition of those at the forefront of teaching and research and contribution to EU integration studies in the world. This award involves rigorous peer review and means that most recent and topical advances in the EU disciplinary area have been incorporated into these courses.

Courses cover topics relating to European societies, European cultures and identity, European integration - future enlargement of the EU, European economic development - business, finance and law, the EU and the wider world, and the history of communism in Eastern Europe.

The European Studies programme offers honours, masters and doctoral degrees. The primary aim of postgraduate study in European and European Union Studies is to foster the interdisciplinary study of Europe in its diversity and to initiate research in all areas related to Europe.

Students from all undergraduate backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Candidates must have completed a bachelors degree and satisfied subject grades and prerequisites. The NCRE offers聽fees scholarships聽for the honours course (on a competitive basis).

The National Centre for Research on Europe (NCRE)聽administers postgraduate studies for European and European Union students. The NCRE is New Zealand's only research centre devoted to the study of Europe and the European Union. It fosters research on the EU that is regionally relevant, for example EU development policy in the Pacific, the EU's identity in the Asia-Pacific region (including EU external images ane perceptions) and the external consequences of EU enlargement. The NCRE is firmly established as the focal point for the study of Europe in New Zealand, attracting visiting academics from all over the world and supporting about 30 research students.

The Centre offers a range of scholarship and internship opportunities to UC students of European and European Union Studies.
